The Changing English Village. A History of Bledington, Gloucestershire in its Setting, 1066-1914

Kineton, Roundwood Press, 1974.

Octavo, xxiv, 425 pages with 2 maps (one folding) plus 8 plates.

Cloth a little bumped at the extremities; an excellent copy with the excellent dustwrapper.

Warmly inscribed, dated (27 July 1974) and signed by the author to Peggy Mountford, Charles Pearcy Mountford's daughter. Loosely inserted is a chatty four-page autograph letter to Peggy from the author, dated the same day. She discusses at length the joys and trials of publishing, mutual friends from Hillcroft School days, and hopes she will be around when Peggy visits England 'in two years' time'. Alas, this was not to be: Miss Ashby, then well into her eighties and in indifferent health, died the following year. Also loosely inserted is a vintage portrait photograph of the author (158 × 103 mm, on the original card mount with an opaque tissue overlay); the verso of the mount is inscribed 'With love & best wishes to Peggy from M.K. Ashby, Christmas 1947'.
