Handsomely bound in contemporary morocco, gilt, by Morley of Oxford; top edge gilt, others uncut; covers a little rubbed at the extremities, with the top corners lightly bumped; contemporary pencilled ownership signature at the head of the title page ('G.H. Waddy 1894'); an excellent copy.
The first separate edition; the story was first published in 1878 in 'Macmillan's Magazine', Volume 38. Number 174 of only 250 copies, hand-set and hand-printed on laid paper at the Daniel Press. Provenance: the New Zealand collector and photographic historian Hardwicke Knight (1911-2008), with his bookplate.
