Selections from the Correspondence of General Washington and James Anderson ... in which the Causes of the Present Scarcity are fully investigated

London, John Cumming, 1800.

Octavo, viii, 88 pages.

Stab-sewn, but neatly disbound with only slight traces of paper residue on the spine; minimal wear to the spines of a few sections; first page (the half-title) and last page slightly foxed and dusty; minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy with an early ownership inscription on the first page ('Wm. Fenton, Spring-Grove', now slightly trimmed).

George Washington (1732-1799) died on 14 December 1799; the four-page 'advertisement' at the beginning of this posthumous publication contains much pertinent information. 'The two letters of General Washington that are given entire ... were published in the "Recreations in Agriculture, [Natural History, Arts, and Miscellaneous Literature]" for February last year. James Anderson was the editor of that journal. Pages 33-74 of this pamphlet contain 'the rude draught of a letter to General Washington' dated London, 10 January 1800; it was 'written out with an intention to be transcribed, and forwarded by an early opportunity, when the news of the death of that much respected man reached this country: of course it was never sent'.
