The author spent more than 28 years with National Mapping, retiring in 1976 as Director Designate of the Division of National Mapping. 'The material for this book has come from a considerable number of sources [but] the principal source has been the Australian Archives in Brighton, Victoria, and Mitchell in the A.C.T., and to a much lesser extent in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth' (acknowledgements).
