Practical Observations on the British Grasses, especially such as are best adapted to the laying down or improving of Meadows and Pastures: likewise an Enumeration of the British Grasses ... Sixth Edition, with Considerable Additions by John Lawrence ... To which is subjoined, a Short Account of the Causes of the Diseases in Corn, called by Farmers the Blight, the Mildew, and the Rust; by Sir Joseph Banks
London, Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co., 1824 (sixth edition).
Octavo, [iv], 166, [22] (publisher's advertisements) pages plus 8 hand-coloured plates (7 full-page plates and one large folding plate, printed surface 205 × 340 mm).
Original plain papered boards recently sympathetically rebacked, retaining the original endpapers; original covers waterstained, with some wear to the extremities and slight surface loss to the front cover; endpapers foxed and tidemarked, with light tidemarks to the top and leading margins of some leaves; two other leaves and one plate more heavily marked (and the latter heavily foxed); folding plate moderately offset; scattered foxing; later ownership signature on the front pastedown; overall a decent well-restored copy.
The Sir Joseph Banks contribution (pages 151-166 plus the folding plate, 'Drawn by Francis Bauer' - Franz Bauer, Ferdinand Bauer's elder brother) first appeared in the fourth edition of this book in 1805. There is a five-line reference in it to 'Specimens received from the colony of New South Wales ... in the year 1803'. This edition is not in Ferguson, but see 399a and 533a (in the Addenda volume) for the fourth and fifth editions.
