Marcus Clarke

Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1958.

Octavo, xvi, 281 pages plus 2 plates.

Cloth lightly rubbed; endpapers lightly offset; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper unevenly sunned (in the shape of a bookend) and slightly creased at the head of the spine.

Provenance: the Anglican Archbishop of Adelaide, Thomas Thornton Reed, , with his armorial bookplate and ownership signature ('Thomas Adelaide'). A charming thank-you card (probably for a birthday card and poem sent by Reed) written and signed by the author, in the original envelope, is laid down on the rear pastedown. The card reads, in part, 'It seems quite incredible that one has reached the three-quarter-century mark!'. Laid down on the rear endpaper are Elliott's brief obituary six years later and two funeral notices. Loosely inserted is a newspaper cutting of Marcus Clarke's obituary, as well as two signed letters from Ian F. McLaren (author of 'Marcus Clarke: an Annotated Bibliography'), and one from Reed to McLaren (concerning two letters from Clarke to Henry Kendall, once in Reed's possession. Reed was a published Kendall scholar). The book is offered with the duplicate typescript of the thesis Elliot submitted for his D. Litt. at the University of Adelaide in 1955; it provided the basic text for a revision which became this published version. [2 items].
