Galtjintana-Pepa Kristianirberaka Mbontala

Hermannsburg in Hannover, [printed and published by] der Missionshandlung, 1891.

Octavo, [iv], 156 pages.

Original quarter roan and pebble-grained papered boards (with the paper laid over cloth-covered corners with only the cloth tips exposed); paper and leather a little rubbed, with the leather a little worn at the head of the spine; an excellent copy.

This 'first Aranda book of Christian instruction and worship ... was compiled by Kempe.... Its contents embodied not only Old and New Testament stories, but prayers for worship and various other occasions, several psalms, and 53 hymns' (see 'From Joiner's Bench to Pulpit', the autobiography of Kempe, translated by Pastor Philipp Scherer, and not published until 1973). A copy of the booklet is included with this item.

Not in Ferguson; Greenway 8867 (mistakenly attributing the translation to Pastor Carl Strehlow); Trove (only seven copies: the mistaken attribution is repeated. Pastor Carl Strehlow did not arrive in Hermannsburg until 12 October 1894). We have seen only one other copy of this book since we commenced dealing in Adelaide in 1976 (the Strehlow copy, which we sold in 2007).
