An albumen paper cabinet photograph (image size 140 x 100 mm) laid down on the silver-embossed card of Bolland of Hanwell. It is a stylised head-and-shoulders portrait in fine condition, inscribed and signed across the base of the image 'Yours truly W.P. Howell'; it dates from his first tour of England in 1899. Howell, a useful all-rounder, toured England three times, taking all 10 for 28 against Surrey in his first appearance there. This particular photograph comes from the personal collection of Victor Trumper: it also comes from the superb Ramamurthy collection, and is sold with a letter of authentication and a mint copy of the 1997 auction sale catalogue (where the item is illustrated, with the provenance not noted).
