Government Geologist's Report on a Journey from Adelaide to Hale River

Government Geologist's Report on a Journey from Adelaide to Hale River

Adelaide, H.F. Leader, Government Printer, [1889].

Foolscap folio, 7 pages plus a folding sketch section and a large folding map (285 × 900 mm).

Drop-title; small holes to the inner margins where stab-sewn when bound (now disbound); leading edge of two leaves a little chipped (where uncut and unopened edges were inexpertly opened); minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy.

South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 24 of 1889; only 700 copies printed. The paper comprises the five-page diary of the trip (from 8 October 1888 to 10 January 1889), and an account of the general geology of the route from Hergott to Alice Springs and Hale River (2 pages). A few non-geological observations make for more interesting reading, for example: 'Water is procured here in several sand wells in the bed of the river, and the supply is practically permanent, judging by the number of people, blacks, horses, cattle, &c., watering here'.
