London, Printed by Edward Couchman for the Proprietor, Samuel Curtis, 1832.

Octavo, with a title, dedication and index leaf, 83 hand-coloured engraved plates (13 folding) numbered 3123 to 3205, illustrating 82 species, each species described in an accompanying section of letterpress (generally a single leaf, but occasionally 2-4 leaves).

Early cloth-backed boards (possibly original?) with a gilt-lettered leather title-label to the spine; all edges uncut; covers somewhat worn; faint offsetting from the plates; some light foxing; small closed tears to two text leaves; binding cracked toward the rear; a few other trifling signs of age and handling; overall, a very good copy with the plates in excellent or fine condition.

The 'New Series' of 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine' was instituted by its new editor William Jackson Hooker, who in these early years contributed the botanical descriptions as well as most of the drawings from which the plates were engraved (by Joseph Swan). This volume illustrates species from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, the Americas and Asia, as well as decorative European plants. Of particular commercial interest are the descriptions of black pepper, green tea and New Zealand flax; the attractive plates of hibiscus, orchids, cacti, grevilleas and acacias speak for themselves.
