[New York], The Franklin Library, [nominally 1978] (three volumes have imprecise publication dates, but five are dated between 1978 and 1981, as below).

Eight volumes in four different formats, ranging from crown octavo (one volume) to medium quarto (two volumes), uniformly bound in full dark blue calf, lettered and decorated in gilt, with '500th Anniversary Edition' at the foot of all spines; silk moire endpapers; satin ribbon bookmarks; all edges gilt (top edge gilding a little blemished in most cases); wooden stand (585 × 290 × 230 mm) lightly marked; overall, an attractive presentation set in excellent condition.

Number 4603 of 7500 sets (with each volume individually numbered 4603) produced by The Franklin Library to commemorate this impressive anniversary, 1478-1978. The main attraction will always be the two-volume Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary ('Complete Text Reproduced Micrographically') (1981). The other volumes are A Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1979); The Oxford Companion to American Literature (1981); The Oxford Companion to English Literature; The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (1978); The Oxford Book of American Verse; and The Oxford Book of English Verse. [8 volumes plus the bookstand).
