Leaf 295/6 is a cancel. The original leaf contained the following text as the second (and last) sentence of the first paragraph, relating to the significance of 'The Bulletin' magazine: 'We who see that journal today as a minor weekly can have little inkling of its once immense influence, not only upon the writers and would-be writers of Australia, but upon the nation's politics'. That sentence has been removed; the rest of the text remains unchanged, but the last two lines on the recto of the cancel were previously the first two lines of the verso of the cancelland. Cains 04 (stating, inaccurately, that the second issue has 'leaves [plural] cancelled', and that 'Copies of the first issue of the first edition retain the original leaf 295/6 with the sentence: "A good deal of the 'Bulletin' material looks as though it had been carved out of the Australian environment with a bush-hook and not a pen ..."'.
