A vintage gelatin silver photograph (184 × 109 mm), on the photographer's card mount (249 × 146 mm).
Mount slightly bumped at the corners and rubbed at the extremities; print very slightly rubbed; in excellent condition.
This studio portrait, signed 'Talma' in ink on the mount, shows Monash in evening dress wearing (among other decorations) the insignia of the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour (France), and Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown (Belgium). General Sir John Monash (1865-1931), was one of the most distinguished Australian commanders of the First World War. Around the time this photograph was taken he had become one of the country's most prominent public figures, including serving as head of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (from 1920) and vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne (from 1923).
