A vintage portrait photograph of an Aboriginal woman and child, most likely at Point McLeay Mission Station, South Australia, circa 1910
A vintage gelatin silver photograph (140 × 88 mm), printed as a postcard.
Light surface indentations and a few minor signs of handling (sent through the post); in very good condition.
The unidentified woman is depicted standing in front of a rudimentary shelter of canvas and blankets, with a young child on her back. The postcard is stamped and postmarked 'Goolwa | S.A. | MR 4 | 10', and the proximity of Goolwa to the Point McLeay makes this the most likely location. The card is addressed simply to 'Miss Dorothy Train | Paskeville', and the text begins: 'Dear Dot, This is a picture of some of [sic] ladys we went to visit last week dont you think it is a pretty baby ... love from Jessie'. Vernon Ragless Padman was born at Middleton on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula in 1891. He appears to have been a keen amateur photographer, and took numerous photographs of the local Ngarrindjeri people, including at Point McLeay (now known as Raukkan) on the southern shore of Lake Alexandrina (see South Australian Museum AA245/1).
