A group of three photographs of Indigenous women and children, with two possibly taken at Lake Tyers, Victoria, circa 1905
Two vintage gelatin silver photographs (137 × 87 mm or the reverse, printed as postcards) and a printed commercial postcard (91 × 131 mm), all stamped and postmarked ('Melbourne'), with messages in ink on both sides.
Minimal signs of age and handling; in excellent condition.
All three items were sent by the same unidentified person (the signature is indistinct, but from context a woman) to the one recipient, a Miss Alexander in the Adelaide suburb of Unley. The first item is a commercially produced postcard with the illustration captioned 'Lubra and Piccaninny'; it is generic by design. The message, dated 9 April 1905, announces the sender's safe arrival home after a trip at sea. The second item, an original vintage photograph, is a delightful portrait of an Indigenous woman holding twin babies, captioned by the sender 'Mammy', and dated 19 June 1905. The message mentions the (mainly) bad weather, and taking care of relatives. The third item, another original vintage photograph, dated 7 July 1905, features a young Indigenous child sitting on grass, with Indigenous weapons and artefacts leaning against shrubbery in the background. The message is partially written in the wide margins of the photograph, and commences with 'One of my Tyers' sweethearts ... only 2½ years old'. The photographers of the two vintage prints are unidentified. [3 items].
