A vintage portrait photograph of Jenny Holmes, a Ngarrindjeri woman, weaving baskets at Middleton, South Australia, circa 1911

A vintage gelatin silver photograph (125 × 100 mm); in near-fine condition.

Holmes is viewed seated in front of a weatherboard structure with basket-making implements and three baskets in front of her, and a partially-completed basket in her hands. The image is vignetted in a decorative leaf shape.

The South Australian Museum holds an example of this photograph captioned 'Jenny Holmes. Middleton 15.VII.11'.

Vernon Ragless Padman was born at Middleton on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula in 1891. He appears to have been a keen amateur photographer, and took numerous photographs of the local Ngarrindjeri people, including at Point McLeay (now known as Raukkan) on the eastern shore of Lake Alexandrina (see South Australian Museum AA245/1).
