Octavo, six volumes, xvi; 784; xvi, 751; xvi, 903; xvi, 1000; xvi, 749; and xvi, 800 pages with numerous maps and diagrams throughout (and a facsimile document in the fifth volume).

Cloth very slightly marked; endpapers lightly offset; all leading edges uncut (with some in the third volume slightly chipped or creased); an excellent set with the very good unclipped dustwrappers (rubbed and a little marked, with some short closed tears and chipping at the extremities).

The second volume contains a two-page 'Publisher's Note | The following changes in the text were received too late for inclusion in the first edition, but will appear in their proper places in future editions' (see pages 631-2).
