Early Cambridge-style panelled sheep, expertly rebacked, retaining most of the early back-strip, and with some infill and recolouring to the sides; some worming, almost entirely confined to the blank margins; occasional ink smudges and other marks (generally unobtrusive); a few corner creases, short closed tears and other minor signs of age and handling; a very good copy.

The first edition of these memoirs by Scottish diplomat Sir James Melville who served at the courts of Mary Queen of Scots (for whom he acted as an envoy to Elizabeth I of England) and James VI and I.
