Blind-tooled full sheep (likely late seventeenth-century), hinges cracked; restoration to the spine and corners; the gutters of several openings reinforced; contemporary marginal annotations to half a dozen leaves (slightly trimmed at the edges, so predating this binding); several lengthy tears (one repaired with tape); numerous waterstains and marks internally; a few chips, spill-burns and other signs of age and handling; a good copy nevertheless.
This is the first complete English translation of William Camden's history of the reign of Elizabeth I, originally published in Latin (1615-1625). Provenance: With a small name-label ('Ernest H. Shackleton.') on the front pastedown.
