Gilt-decorated red cloth slightly flecked and bumped; spine lightly sunned; minimal signs of age and handling; a very good copy.
'Presented by the Author to Mr. Stephen King at the Stuart Jubilee Celebration | July 25th, 1912. John Blacket' is inscribed on the front pastedown. The rear free endpaper has a small circular inkstamp for the 'Stephen King - Stuart Collection'. Stephen King Jr (1841-1915) was the surveyor and unofficial artist on John McDouall Stuart's sixth and final expedition (the party of ten made the first successful return crossing of the continent of Australia from south to north in 1862). Later, occasional reunions took place in Adelaide; four of the five survivors were present at the golden jubilee celebrations in 1912 (King, W.P. Auld, Heath Nash, and J. McGorrey). J.W. Billiatt (1863-1919), King's cousin and brother-in-law, had returned to live in England in 1900; he was the last survivor.
