One of 300 copies signed in pencil by both the author and the artist on a tipped-in slip; this copy is additionally signed in ink by the author on the title page.

The first half comprises 'At the Gate', Lesson 8 from the author's 2003 novel 'Elizabeth Costello' (in English), and the second half a translation into German by Reinhild Böhnke. Both are prefaced by Franz Kafka's short story 'Vor dem Gesetz' [Before the Law].

This is the eleventh volume in the publisher's Edition Refugium series. The edition included 100 numbered copies with an original etching by Kurt Löb.

J.M. Coetzee is the first author to win the Booker Prize twice (in 1983 and 1999); he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
