India Orientalis Nova
[Amsterdam, Elzevir, circa 1660s].
A hand-coloured engraved map (printed surface 120 × 124 mm, sheet size 130 × 144 mm).
Two vertical folds, as issued; some faint tanning about the edges; in near-fine condition.
A small but attractive map of the East Indies, including the northwest coast of Australia as charted by Tasman (labelled 'Hollandia Nova'). China, the Indian subcontinent, the southern part of Japan, the Philippines, and the Indonesian archipelago are all shown. The map comes from a duodecimo edition of Clüver's 'Introductionis in universam geographiam', probably one of the illustrated editions published by Elzevir from 1659 onwards.
