Paper slightly tanned and marked in the margins (outside the plate mark); a few trifling spots of foxing; in excellent condition.
One of the earliest published maps to show the full coastline of Australia, issued after Freycinet's 'Carte Générale de la Nouvelle Hollande' (1811) but before Flinders' 'General Chart of Terra Australis or Australia' (1814, the publication of which was delayed due to the explorer's imprisonment on Mauritius). This map features: parallel French and English names along the South Australian coastline; engraved vignette illustrations of an Aboriginal warrior and Australian wildlife (after illustrations in the official account of the Baudin voyage); longitude measured from the Paris meridian; and a large spurious lake outlined to the west of the Blue Mountains, labelled 'Lac selon les Sauvages'. It comes from Malte-Brun's 'Atlas Complet du précis de la Geographie universelle' (1812). Tooley 844 (giving the date 1809, in error).
