Universi Orbis Descriptio ad usum Navigantium

[Venice, Gio. Battista & Giorgio Galignani fratelli, 1598/ 1596].

An engraved map (plate mark 138 × 181 mm, sheet size approximately 295 × 195 mm), set in letterpress text recto and verso.

Some faint tanning; a few faint spots of foxing; remnants of previous mounting on the verso; in excellent condition.

'Magini's mariner's map follows Gerard Mercator's large world map of 1569 on a much reduced scale and with the fanciful addition of chains of mountains across the southern continent' (Shirley). It was engraved by Girolamo Porro for Magini's important 1596 edition of Ptolemy ('Geographiae Universae tum Veteris tum Novae Absolutissimum'), and was reissued periodically in later editions and in other publications. This example is from the first Italian edition, published two years later, but printed from the same plate. The letterpress title above the map reads 'XXXV. Descrittione di tutto'l mondo secondo la prattica de' marinari'.
