Gilt-decorated green cloth; free endpapers tanned and offset; bottom edge uncut, leading edge not cut closely, resulting in some imperfections (but as issued); edges slightly marked; minimal signs of age and handling; an excellent copy.
A remarkably fresh copy of the scarce colonial issue. It features a variant binding of gilt-stamped green cloth, simpler than the standard issue and with 'Methuen's Colonial Library' at the foot of the spine. The same is printed on the half-title and title pages, and these conjugate leaves appear to constitute a variant first gathering, with the rest of the text proper bound from the sheets of the first edition. The standard first issue contains two advertising supplements, the longer of which is included here (dated May 1913), and the endpaper advertisements for this issue advertise the Colonial Library's fiction offerings. Not in McIlvaine (but see A16a.1 for the standard UK issue).
