John McDouall Stuart's Explorations, 1858-62. South Australian Parliamentary Papers, 1858-63
Adelaide, Friends of the State Library of South Australia, 2001 (first thus)/ 1858 to 1863.
Octavo, v-xxxvi, 396 pages plus a frontispiece portrait and a large folding map.
Quarter calf and pictorial cloth; a fine copy.
Number 76 of only 99 copies of the deluxe issue (in a total edition of 500 copies). Australian Parliamentary Editions Number 3. 'This work republishes the five ... papers published soon after the end of each of Stuart's journeys' (with the exception of the second expedition from April to July 1859, which was not published as a parliamentary paper); the map is reproduced from the 1865 edition of the journals, edited by William Hardman. The text of this edition is closest to Stuart's manuscripts, as Hardman substantially rewrote, condensed and omitted passages in his edition, and was famously disdainful of Stuart. The 29-page introduction by Valmai Hankel is new to this edition. In this series, to 'make them easier to read the [original foolscap folio] format has been changed and the type reset in a more legible size'.
