Item #146647 Long Ago in Borneo. Prisoners of War, Bill YOUNG, H. W S. JACKSON, J. R. BRAITHWAITE, Keith BOTTERILL.
Long Ago in Borneo

Long Ago in Borneo

[Tasmania, Bill Young, circa 1990s].

Octavo, [iv], 43 pages with a plan and several illustrations (two in colour).

Pictorial wrappers lightly rubbed and marked; a very good copy.

A self-published compilation of first-hand accounts of the Sandakan Death Marches in Borneo during the Second World War. Of some 2500 Allied prisoners only six survived. The contents are 'Death March from Sandakan' by J.R. Braithwaite; 'A Report on the Borneo Death Marches' by Lieutenant Colonel H.W.S. Jackson; 'The Witness of One of the Six Survivors' by Keith Botterill; and 'B. Force to Borneo' by Bill Young (who also contributed the illustrations and verse). The first three contributions seem to have been recorded soon after the events they describe.

Bill Young appears to have produced several versions of this work and to have printed them on a home printer. We have handled another example with the same contents entitled 'From Sandakan to Ranau, 1945: A Story of Tragedy'.
