Doctor and the Aborigines

Adelaide, Rigby, 1972.

Octavo, [xviii], 219 pages plus 44 plates.

Papered boards; a fine copy with the fine dustwrapper.

An important association copy: it is signed on the title-page by the author, and loosely inserted are two autograph letters signed by him, the duplicate typescript of the letter that prompted the second one from Duguid, and a 1974 newspaper cutting about a race relations award given to him.

The first letter (two pages, small octavo, dated 23 March 1966) expresses his deeply appreciative thanks for a letter of support: it 'makes one forget the strain of the fight ... I know no happier place in Australia than the Ernabella Mission, still working according to the plan I laid down with the Sth Aus Gov in 1935'. The rest of the letter spells out the benefits of total abstinence on the mission and elsewhere.

The second letter (one page, small quarto with attached magazine cuttings, dated 2 February 1973) refers to a passing remark in a brief review of this book - the review (attached) recommends the book even to 'those who disagree with his view of the work of' the Australian Inland Mission. Duguid states emphatically 'I did not elaborate on my view of the AIM. I gave a factual statement on the situation as I found it in the nineteen thirties & that included my praise of the AIM Flying Doctor'. Mrs Duguid thinks the criticism most unfair, that a response should not come from the Doctor - 'Would you be willing to make the reply'? A copy of the response is included ... [A small quantity].
