A signed portrait photograph of Sir Robert Philp (1851-1922), co-founder of shipping firm Burns, Philp & Co., and twice Premier of Queensland
Brisbane, J.S. Wiley & Sturgess, [circa 1918].
A gelatin silver photograph (135 × 97 mm), on the original mount (approximately 221 × 171 mm).
Some minor surface loss to the image; mount slightly worn and marked; in very good condition.
Signed 'Robt. Philp | 18 July / 18' across the bottom corner of the photograph. Burns, Philp & Co. was the preeminent passenger and merchant shipping line of Australia and the South Pacific, although Philp was forced to sell his stake in the firm in 1893 due to mounting debt. His two terms as Premier of Queensland (1899-1903 and briefly in 1907-1908) were dominated by the incorporation of the colony into the newly-federated Commonwealth of Australia (including tensions over the continued use of Melanesian labour in Queensland sugar plantations).
