An autograph letter signed to an unnamed recipient, providing autobiographical information, and forwarding a photograph for publication
Octavo, 2 pages (the outer pages of a bifolium) on '26, Maida Vale, W.... P.O. Hampstead' letterhead; 8 November 1911; light crease across the middle where folded for posting; in excellent condition.
'Dear Sir, I thank you very much for your letter, & am sending you herewith my photograph. Would you kindly ask the printers to be careful with it as it is the only print I have of it.' The balance of the letter (approximately 150 words) commences with a very short account of his early life ('I was born in Toulouse in France') and later studies ('after a reluctant attempt at becoming a barrister, I studied at the art school there for three years, then I spent two years in Paris during which I managed to study (?) six months at the Julian Academy. I then started to illustrate books. In the meantime I painted a few portraits & exhibited at the Salon'). He settled in England in 1905 and 'worked for different publishers', whom he names, along with assorted titles he has illustrated. 'Since five years I have concentrated my efforts upon publishing with Messrs Hodder & Stoughton, one book every year ... "The Stories of Hans Andersen" ... is my last production'.
