Signed by the author on the title page. 'Uncorrected bound proof | Not for resale' is printed at the foot of the rear cover. Faint pencilled annotations on 10 pages, suggesting excisions and additional paragraph breaks. These were not incorporated into the published version and may be in the hand of an early proofreader. J.M. Coetzee is the first author to win the Booker Prize twice (in 1983 and 1999); he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
