Signed by the author on the title page 'J.M. Coetzee | 1988' (although signed at a later date). This American edition was published simultaneously with a paperback edition for the South African market (Radix), which may have been released slightly earlier.

J.M. Coetzee is the first author to win the Booker Prize twice (in 1983 and 1999); he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
