This is an uncorrected book proof made available in confidence to selected persons for specific review purpose, and is not for sale or other distribution ...' The pagination in the latter portion of the volume did require correcting... The book is a work of fiction, with most pages divided horizontally into three sections, comprising an essay on politics and modern life by 'Señor C.', and reflections from his typist Anya (uninterested in politics) and her lover Alan (more cynical and materialistic). J.M. Coetzee is the first author to win the Booker Prize twice (in 1983 and 1999); he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.
