Contemporary full calf lettered in gilt on the spine (including 'Legislature S.A.' at the foot), and ruled in blind on the spine and sides; all edges speckled red; leather a little rubbed and slightly worn at the extremities; contemporary inkstamps of the library of the Legislature of South Australia on the title page; all folding leaves (2 maps and 4 tables) mounted on linen at the time of binding; minimal signs of age and handling; a very good copy.

The superb Woodburytypes are the highlight of this important volume; retrospectively, they depict 'Andamanese Canoes', 'Andamanese Man and Woman, showing Profiles', 'Andamanese Chief with Bow and Arrows', 'Andamanese Equipped for Journey', and 'Andamanese Shooting, Dancing, Sleeping, and Greeting'.

Among the other 28 articles in this volume are substantial contributions by Howitt, A.W. and Reverend Lorimer Fison: From Mother-right to Father-right (pages 30-46); Howitt, A.W.: Notes on the Australian Class System (pages 496-512 with a map); and Wake, C. Staniland: The Papuans and the Polynesians (pages 197-221).
