Contemporary gilt-tooled panelled calf; spine gilt in compartments; covers worn and marked; front board expertly reattached; rear joint cracked but firm; some scattered light foxing internally; endpapers tanned, with a bookplate removed from the front pastedown; a few other minor signs of age and handling; internally in very good condition.
Piazza was a Delegate Judge of the Inquisition at Osimo, then part of the Papal States, who later taught Italian and French at Cambridge and converted to the Church of England. This work, with parallel text in English and French, recounts several cases over which he presided and gives details of the methods of the Inquisition (including torture). The final section attacks Catholic superstitions by way of a collection of some of the Church's more far-fetched legends.
