An engraved map (printed surface approximately 305 × 339 mm), matted, glazed and framed (external dimensions 500 × 535 mm). Engraved by J. Cheevers.
Horizontal and vertical folds, as issued; scattered foxing; two small patches of discolouration (perhaps from the mounting tape) about the top edge; not examined out of the frame, but overall in very good condition, well-presented in a solid timber frame.
The earliest published chart to delineate the Great Barrier Reef. It tracks the course taken by James Cook's 'Endeavour' between Cape Tribulation (near where the ship ran aground on 11 June 1770), up the Queensland coast to Cape York, through treacherous reefs and shoals here labelled 'The Labyrinth'. The chart is oriented west, and comes from the first edition of 'An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the Order of His Present Majesty for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere ...' edited by John Hawkesworth, the official account of Cook's first voyage.
