An impressive presentation copy: the front free endpaper is inscribed and signed in pencil 'To G. Bernard Shaw. | Compliments | Alfred Stieglitz | N.Y. May 16, 1910'. George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was 'not only a prolific playwright, writer and social-political commentator and thinker but an avid amateur photographer: taking and collecting images from the 1860s until his death in 1950. Shaw left his paper and photographic archives to London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the British Library'; he collected around 16,000 photographs taken by himself and others (Archives Hub, online). Shaw was an occasional contributor to 'Camera Work'; this issue contains a series of reviews of an exhibition of photographs by Eduard J. Steichen, four of which praise his portrait of Shaw. The small paper label of the London booksellers W. & G. Foyle Ltd. ('Libraries purchased') is mounted at the foot of the front pastedown.
