Original quarter morocco-grain cloth, moiré cloth sides lettered in gilt; contemporary Chinese binder's stamp in red ink on the rear pastedown; covers a little sunned and flecked; minimal wear to the corner tips; occasional pencilled emphases internally; in excellent condition.
This scarce history was printed 'For Private Circulation only'. With a contemporary label on the front pastedown: 'Presented by Sir Frederick Maze, Inspector-General of Chinese Maritime Customs and Administrator of the Chinese Lighthouse Department'. The Chinese Maritime Customs Service was initially imposed by Western powers after the Taiping Rebellion, and continued to be run by non-Chinese officials until after the fall of the Qing dynasty. The author had a long career in the Service, served as Personal Secretary to the Inspector General, and later as its historian.
