A collection of 96 stereo photographs showing the aftermath of famous disasters: the San Francisco earthquake of 1906; the Messina earthquake of 1908; the Kingston earthquake of 1907; the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée; and the fire and wreck of the PS 'General Slocum' in 1904

New York, Underwood & Underwood; Chicago, H.C. White Co.; Meadville, Keystone View Company; and London, Fine Art Photographers' Publishing Co., 1901 to 1909.

The pairs of images are approximately 80 × 77 mm each (top corners rounded), laid down on printed cards (approximately 88 × 177 mm). All have printed captions or titles on the rectos, and some have descriptive text on the versos.

A few trifling signs of age and handling; overall in near-fine condition. Each card comes in a glassine sleeve (some slightly torn), and the collection is now housed in a custom-made cloth-covered box.

Full details of each event are as follows.

(1) The San Francisco earthquake of 1906. A total of 55 views, almost all showing scenes of destruction in the immediate aftermath of the quake. One image is a 'before' shot of Market Street (dated 1901) included as a contrast to an 'after' view from the same position. A very small number show damage at Palo Alto. (26 by Underwood, 10 by White, 19 by Keystone).

(2) The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée, Martinique. A total of 14 views. Seven show Mount Pelée in active eruption, five show the devastated towns of Saint-Pierre and Morne Rouge, one shows the related eruption of the La Soufrière volcano on nearby Saint Vincent, and one shows Saint-Pierre before the eruption. (3) The Messina earthquake of 1908. A total of 10 views, all showing the destruction and salvage efforts at Messina and Reggio Calabria, except for one 'before' shot of the cathedral at Reggio. (6 Underwood, 4 Keystone).

(4) The Kingston earthquake of 1907. A total of 9 views (all by White), showing the devastated town and salvage efforts.

(5) The sinking of the PS 'General Slocum' in New York City's East River in 1904. A total of 8 views (all by White), two showing divers attempting to retrieve bodies, the remainder showing the burned out wreckage after it had been raised and towed.
