Later half calf and cloth by Riviere & Son; spines tooled in gilt with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces; top edges gilt, others uncut; covers a little sunned and rubbed; tiny chips and trifling tears to the edges of some leaves (where unopened leaves carelessly opened by an early owner); a few marks and other minor signs of age and handling; overall, in excellent condition.
Provenance: Margaret Martin of Oxford, with her ownership signature at three places in the second and third volumes (twice dated 1805). 'One John Turnbull and his partner John Buyers purchased the ship "Margaret" and fitted her out for a trading voyage to the Pacific and around the world between 1800 and 1804. In February 1801 they arrived in Sydney and Turnbull recorded the township, agriculture, and trade in considerable detail ... His account is the first work to describe New South Wales from a commercial point of view and introduced Australia to the world as a field for private commercial endeavour and emigration' (Wantrup, page 149).
