London, Printed by Edward Couchman for the Proprietor, Samuel Curtis, 1827 and 1828.

Octavo, two volumes, each with a title, dedication and index leaf, plus a total of 171 hand-coloured engraved plates (21 folding) numbered 2705 to 2875, illustrating some 157 species, each species described in an accompanying section of letterpress (generally one leaf, but occasionally as long as five leaves).

Modern period-style papered boards with paper title-labels; covers very slightly marked; some light offsetting (a little heavier in the second volume); occasional faint spots of foxing; ink annotation to one folding plate (2748); preliminaries to Volume I slightly short; a few other trifling signs of age and handling; in excellent condition.

The 'New Series' of 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine' was instituted by its new editor William Jackson Hooker, who in these early years contributed the botanical descriptions as well as most of the drawings from which the plates were engraved (by Joseph Swan). These volumes illustrate species from around the world, including Australia and the Pacific, the Americas, Africa and Asia, as well as decorative European plants.
