Quarto, three volumes, x, 200 pages of duplicated typescript plus 15 pages of plates; [xiv], 173 pages with 50 plates (including a number of charts); and xii, 94 (last blank), iv pages with 47 plates (including a number of charts).

Card covers (first volume) and papered boards (second and third volumes), all lettered on the front cover; card covers sunned on the spine and a little tanned around the edges of the sides, with a short crease to top corner of the front cover and some early leaves; papered boards unevenly sunned; title written in ink on the spine of the first two volumes; free endpapers of the second volume heavily tanned; scattered foxing (generally light, and confined mainly to the first volume, and the edges of the second volume); bottom corner of most of the leaves of the third volume bumped or a little creased; overall, the group is in very good condition.

Number 52 of 200 copies (the first volume), number 30 of 500 copies (the second), and number 25 of 200 copies (the Supplement). All three volumes are presentation copies inscribed and initialled by the author in the year of publication to his colleague Herbert T. Condon, curator of birds at the South Australian Museum from 1938-1976.

The first volume is based on three main sources: the official published account written by Peron and Freycinet after the death of Baudin (much of it had not at this time been translated into English); Baudin's manuscript journal (not published in English until 1974); and the manuscript diary of Master-Shipwright Ronsard.

The second contains much material from 'the unpublished Log Books of the "Investigator". Extracts from Flinders' rough and also his compilation manuscript charts ... presented for the first time'.

The Supplement contains a 'considerable amount of material, much of it hitherto unpublished' that was received by the author too late for inclusion in the two preceding volumes.

Harold More Cooper (1886-1970) was assistant ethnologist at the South Australian Museum from 1941 ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). [3 items].
