Small quarto, 32 volumes, approximately 1000 pages per volume, with hundreds of illustrations plus hundreds of plates and maps (some in colour, some folding).
Original burgundy leather stamped in gilt and blind; top edges gilt; covers slightly rubbed and sunned, with a small snag at the head of the spine of Volume 28; endpapers a little tanned; edges a little marked; a small number of leaves and plates slightly creased (one map in Volume 18 with a short tear); an excellent set, housed in a custom-made glazed bookcase featuring a leaded glass panel in the hinged door (overall dimensions 990 × 360 × 215 mm).
The twelfth edition comprises the 29 volumes of the eleventh edition (dated 1910 and 1911), plus three 'New Volumes, constituting, in combination with the existing volumes of the eleventh edition, the twelfth edition', and dated 1922. This 'Handy Volume Issue' is printed on India paper and in a smaller format than the standard issue.
