The Grammar of Ornament. Illustrated by Examples from Various Styles of Ornament
London, Bernard Quaritch, 1868 [third edition]/ 1856.
Large quarto (340 × 253 mm), [ii], 157 pages with numerous illustrations plus 112 full-page chromolithographs (including the frontispiece, a calligraphic rendition of the title).
Early half maroon morocco (lettered in gilt on the spine) and cloth sides (the cloth and endpapers expertly replaced at a later date); all edges gilt; small light marginal stains to the frontispiece, and the bottom marginal corner of Plates 59-64; light marginal discolouration to most plates; short sealed tear to the leading margin of one plate; occasional signs of age and use, but overall, a very good copy. One plate is supplied from another edition (Plate LXXIII, 'Illuminated M.S.S. No. 3'): it does not have the printed caption or number in the top margin, and all edges are slightly trimmed.
Provenance: Alexander C. Forrester, with his early signature on the retained flyleaf. The book later entered the collection of Sir Josiah Symon (1846-1934), South Australian lawyer and politician, a member of the Australian Senate in the First Australian Parliament, an Attorney-General of Australia (and much else besides). We purchased it recently from the estate sale of one of his grand-daughters; his typed shelf reference slip ('Shelf 1E | Sitting Room') is loosely inserted.
