Octavo, two volumes, xii, 496 pages plus a frontispiece, a title vignette and 28 plates after engravings by George Cruickshank; and vi, 474 pages plus a frontispiece, a title vignette and 28 plates from engravings by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz).

Contemporary half morocco and pebble-grain cloth, the spines lettered in gilt in compartments; marbled edges and endpapers a little rubbed and scuffed, with the spines lightly sunned; small stain to the bottom corner-tip of two facing pages; minimal signs of age and use; an excellent pair.

The English novelist Francis Edward Smedley (1818-1864) is best known for these two works. Provenance: William Godley (a Melbourne furniture maker) with his signature (1874) at the head of one title page, and his early ownership label on the front pastedowns. The bindings are possibly colonial. [2 items].
