Item #142401 A Souvenir of the Great World War and the Glorious Part played by Australia and New Zealand [caption printed on cloth]. Gallipoli.

A Souvenir of the Great World War and the Glorious Part played by Australia and New Zealand [caption printed on cloth]

A hemmed piece of cloth (approximately 470 × 600 mm), with a series of patriotic illustrations printed in colour on the recto.

Cloth a little foxed and lightly stained (but these minor blemishes are confined almost exclusively to the margins outside the printed surface); overall, in excellent condition.

The centrepiece is a large oval illustration (270 × 370 mm) depicting 'The Landing of our Gallant Sons of Empire on the Gallipoli Peninsula' (some of whom have already been killed in action). Ten Allied and Commonwealth flags radiate from it; each corner of the cloth contains a circular illustration (approximately 135 mm diameter) of unnamed Royal Navy warships. Overshadowed by these stirring images is '"The Scrap Heap" | A View of the "Emden" after the Fight | with the "Sydney" off the Cocos Keeling Islands' (9 November 1914).

There are no production details printed on the souvenir, but we suggest it was made in England in 1915.
