The Renascence of South Africa

London, Hurst and Blackett, Limited, 1900.

Octavo, viii, 300, 16 (publisher's catalogue) pages plus a folding colour map.

Pictorial cloth a little bubbled, sunned, and slightly flecked and rubbed; edges, endpapers and adjacent leaves foxed, with a few additional spots of foxing elsewhere; a few minor signs of age and handling; a very good copy.

Provenance: South Australian ornithologist and conservationist Captain Samuel Albert White (1870-1954) with his ink ownership details on the half-title 'S.A. White - Lieut. | East London | July 8th 1901 | South Africa'. White served with the 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen in the Boer War, but did not sail with the contingent when it embarked for Australia at the port of East London, Cape Colony, on 5th July 1901. He was soon 'promoted to captain, a rank he used for the rest of his life, [and] was officer in charge at Colesberg in Cape Colony as the war came to an end' (Anthony Stimson, on the Virtual War Memorial Australia website).
