Many of the 42 sonnets are accompanied by footnotes (sometimes acerbic), several of which refer directly to Oscar Wilde or to Douglas' sentence in Wormwood Scrubs prison for libelling Winston Churchill. Any homoerotic references in Douglas' earlier sonnets have been assiduously rewritten.
