The eight-page introduction is by Margarette Lincoln. 'The text in this Folio Society edition is taken from the updated two-volume edition of 1728. We have included all of the pirates that featured in the first edition, with the lives of Mary Read and Anne Bonny appearing as chapters in their own right, and have included the pirate William Kidd from the second volume, as well as appendices to some lives which now appear with the main text. The spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation have been discreetly modernised for clarity and ease of reading, whilst maintaining the style of Captain Johnson' (editorial note).
