Paintings in Oil ... With Essays by Douglas Stewart and Norman Lindsay
Sydney, The Shepherd Press, [1945].
Large quarto, [40] pages with 3 line illustrations plus 30 plates (including 14 tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue-guards).
Gilt-decorated jade-green papered boards a little rubbed at the extremities, with a large light (but dare we say, inoffensive?) stain to the rear cover; minimal light foxing to the leading edge; overall, an excellent copy (internally very fine) with the rare pictorial dustwrapper (chipped with minor loss and some short edge tears, with a large sealed tear to the rear panel). The dustwrapper is printed on thick acidic paper which tends to brittleness, hence its relative scarcity. This example is now loosely backed up with matching brown paper, and protected with removable archival film; it presents very well.
Number 384 of 1000 copies with the artist's signature in facsimile at the foot of the limitation page. The essays are 'The Flesh and the Spirit' (7 pages) by Douglas Stewart, and 'Paint and Primitivism' (14 pages) by Norman Lindsay.
